Program Planning, Preparation and Implementation

1.         Provides appropriate instruction within the prescribed curriculum.

3.         Establishes short and long range program goals which are consistent with the general philosophy of the school system as embodied in curriculum guides, adopted textbooks, handbooks.

4.         Employs instructional methods, materials and resources, which are conducive to meeting stated objectives.  Deviation from this practice is acceptable by mutual agreement of the teacher and administration for the purpose of meeting individual student needs.

5.         Initiates and plans in-service programs for staff and community members.

6.         Serves as a resource person in various areas of the curriculum.

7.         Provides counseling for individuals and small groups as the need arises and time permits.

Classroom Organization and Management

1.         Establishes a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and to the development of a positive self-concept.

2.         Develops appropriate rules for student behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and consistent manner.

3.         Organizes the classroom facilities and instructional materials to promote optimal use.

Evaluation, Record Keeping, and Reporting

1.         Assesses the progress of students on a continuing basis, provides progress reports, and holds appropriate conferences.  Communicates with parents and other staff members to bring about pupil growth.

2.         Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.

Miscellaneous

1.         Assists in implementing school-wide policies and rules governing student conduct.

2.         Attends meetings as required (i.e. faculty meetings, parent conferences, etc.).

3.         Serves on established committees either on a voluntary basis or by assignment.

4.         Supervises student teachers and non-instructional personnel by mutual consent with the building principal.

5.         Submits annual budget requests to the building principal.

6.         Conducts and records an annual inventory of equipment and supplies.

7.         Strives to keep informed of the current educational trends in this area.

8.         Accepts and performs duties and responsibilities not ordinarily associated with the position in cases of emergency or when unusual or unpredictable circumstances arise.

Under the direction and planning of the teacher, the teaching assistant shall carry out duties and responsibilities as described below.  The assistant’s role in the classroom is to assist the teacher in helping the students to develop and grow based upon educational, management, behavioral, social, physical, and/or other special needs.

The teaching assistant shall perform the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Work with individual pupils or groups of pupils on instructional projects.

2. Provide the teacher with information about pupils, which will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences.

3. Work with students in all areas of instruction under the supervision of a teacher, special area teacher, therapist, or administrator as requested by the teacher and/or administrator.

4. Documents academic and behavioral progress at the request of the teacher and/or administrator.

5. Assist pupils in the use of available instructional resources and assist in the development of instructional materials.

6. As necessary, attend to the personal needs of students (dressing, toileting, feeding, etc.).

7. As necessary, lift, position, or otherwise handle students using techniques prescribed for students with special needs.

8. Supervise outside classroom activity areas such as the bathroom, cafeteria, playground, field trips, hall and bus duties, etc. as requested by the teacher and/or administrator.

9. Assist the teacher in testing programs and situations.

10. Attends staff meetings and in-service training.

11. Other duties as directed by the teacher and/or administrator.
